Portrait of László Krasznahorkai

László Krasznahorkai has received the prestigious Nobel in Literary Arts.

The Hungarian writer was recognised "due to his gripping and forward-thinking oeuvre that, amidst cataclysmic terror, reaffirms the might of creative expression."

Krasznahorkai has produced 5 books and won numerous further literary prizes, for instance the 2015 International Booker Award, and the 2013's best rendered novel award in Narrative for his initial novel Satantango, a avant-garde creation regarding the conclusion of the planet.

He is the 2nd Hungarian novelist to obtain the award after the deceased Kertesz Imre, who won in 2002.

Originating in 1954, the author obtained recognition in 1985 when he published Satantango, which he adapted for the cinema in the mid-1990s.

This b&w movie, by Hungarian cinematographer Béla Tarr, is renowned for its lengthy duration.

The author's additional works comprise:

  • "The Melancholy of Resistance" (1989)
  • War & War (1999)
  • Seiobo Below (2008)

Nobel committee described him as "an great epic novelist in the Central Europe heritage that extends through Kafka to Bernhard Thomas, and is marked by the absurd and grotesque extremity."

His 2021 novel Herscht 07769 has been described as a significant modern German novel, due to its accuracy in portraying the land's societal unrest just before the pandemic.

It is a depiction of a current hamlet in Thüringen, the Federal Republic of Germany, afflicted by societal chaos, murder and incendiarism.

"Gentle giant Florian is an parentless child, adopted by a far-right extremist who has mentored him as a graffiti remover.

"The leader, a Bach enthusiast, is enraged that a person is using wolf symbol emblems across the monuments to the renowned composer in their former GDR town."

One review remarked it as "thus bleak from start to finish."

The writer's most recent satirical book, Zsömle Odavan, returns to the Hungarian setting.

The lead is 91-year-old Uncle Kada, who has a secret right to the throne but has gone to great lengths to fade away from the world.
